The Deck Decides the Equipment

Deck height is the first question on any flatbed tender, because it determines how tall a load can travel before it runs into the legal height limit.

A standard flatbed deck sits roughly 5 feet off the ground, which leaves about 8'6" of clearance under the 13'6" legal height limit most states enforce. A step-deck drops the main deck section to around 3 to 3.5 feet, buying back that difference for taller freight — construction equipment, crated machinery, tall industrial parts — that would exceed the limit on a standard deck. We run 48' and 53' lengths in both configurations, and which one gets dispatched comes down to the piece's dimensions before anything else: height first, then length and width, then weight and how it distributes across the axles.

Loading almost never happens by hand. Steel coil and pipe load by crane or overhead hoist; palletized building materials and packaged roofing load by forklift; irregular machinery sometimes needs both, plus blocking to keep it from shifting once it's on the deck. Once freight is positioned, FMCSA cargo securement rules set the minimum: the number of tie-downs scales with the piece's weight and length, chains or straps have to carry a calculated working load limit rather than just look tight, and edge protection goes anywhere a strap crosses a sharp corner so it doesn't cut through under tension. Tarping gets added on top of that whenever the freight can't tolerate weather — steel that would corrode, lumber that would swell or warp, machinery with exposed components — and a full tarp job on a large or irregular load is a real time cost, often an hour or more, that gets built into the pickup window rather than discovered as a delay.
